It is with profound sadness that the Mason family announced, on 16 October 2026, the passing of Mr Mickey Mason, beloved husband, father, grandfather, entrepreneur, conservationist and proud Seychellois.

Throughout his life, Mr. Mason built businesses, created opportunities and helped shape industries across Seychelles. He was best known for his founding roles at Mason’s Travel (Seychelles’ longest-operating DMC), Marine Equipment & Services (Seychelles longest-operating ship chandler) and leading boutique hotels, such as Indian Ocean Lodge, CaranaBeach Hotel and Denis Private Island. Yet those who knew him best understood that his greatest motivation lay in the satisfaction of seeing potential realised.

He took pleasure in watching a young business find its footing, an employee grow in confidence, a forest recover, a farm flourish or a population of wildlife rebound under careful protection. Growth, in all its forms, fascinated him. Nurturing potential became one of the defining themes of his life.

Together with his wife Kathy, Mickey spent more than five decades building enterprises that became woven into the fabric of Seychellois life. Their success was grounded in a belief in local ownership, long-term thinking and creating opportunities that would endure. The businesses they established were never simply commercial ventures; they were built to support livelihoods, strengthen communities and contribute to the development of Seychelles.

This commitment extended well beyond business: for many years, Mickey was an active member of the Rotary Club of Victoria, supporting initiatives that sought to strengthen communities and improve lives across Seychelles. Service, whether through business, conservation or civic engagement, remained a defining feature of his life.

HIS ENTREPRENEURIAL ACHIEVEMENTS WERE SIGNIFICANT BUT THEY NEVER FULLY EXPLAINED THE MAN.

An avid sailor and fisherman, Mickey felt most at home outdoors. He was fascinated by the natural world and possessed an enduring curiosity about how people and ecosystems could thrive together. Long before sustainability became a corporate buzzword, Mickey believed that environmental stewardship and economic success were not competing priorities, but natural partners. This conviction informed much of his life’s work, from conservation initiatives and sustainable agriculture
and forestry projects, to the establishment of the Green Islands Foundation, through which he helped champion a more sustainable future for Seychelles.

NOWHERE WAS THIS PHILOSOPHY MORE EVIDENT THAN AT DENIS PRIVATE ISLAND.

For Mickey and Kathy, Denis Island has always been far more than a business. It is a home, a passion and, in many ways, the fullest expression of the values they shared. There, conservation, agriculture and hospitality came together in a way that reflected their belief that growth should enhance, rather than diminish, the natural
environment.

Mickey took particular pride in the restoration of the island’s habitats, the recovery of its wildlife populations and the development of a thriving farm that demonstrated what could be achieved through ingenuity, perseverance and careful stewardship. Visitors may have seen an island paradise; Mickey saw a living ecosystem, constantly evolving and full of possibility.

Those closest to him are more likely, however, to remember his sharp intelligence, mischievous sense of humour and deep curiosity. He approached life with energy, optimism and an enduring interest in the world around him.

ABOVE ALL, HE WAS DEVOTED TO HIS FAMILY.

One of his greatest pleasures in later years was watching the next generation assume responsibility and continue the work he and Kathy had begun together. He understood that the truest measure of any endeavour lies not in what it achieves today, but in what it enables tomorrow.

Across Seychelles, his influence can still be found in thriving businesses, protected environments, community initiatives and opportunities created for countless others. Through his work as an entrepreneur, conservation advocate, Rotarian and mentor, he contributed to the  development of the country he loved in ways that will endure for generations.

Yet perhaps the most fitting measure of his life is simpler than that: the people, places and projects he cared about continue to flourish.

For a man who dedicated so much of his life to helping things grow, there could be no greater legacy.
